There is nothing custom about a small, medium, or large hat size. Those are standard sizing measurements. Those are NOT what custom hats are all about.

Creases in cowboy hats are used to give hats individual character. They can also help identify with a particular subculture (rancher, rodeo riders, etc).
The creases and dents in a cowboy hat make it easier for the wearer to remove the hat by grabbing the crown of the hat - instead of the brim, which could cause the hat
to “fall out of shape.”
A ten-gallon hat DOES NOT hold 10 gallons of water.
The phrase “mad as a hatter,” referred to the unstable personalities of hat makers brought on by the mercury nitrite that was used in the industry in the early days.

A removed hat should be held in such a way that shows only the outside. The lining should never be visible. (such a shame!)
It is considered unlucky to put a hat on a bed.
It is considered DEADLY to knock a cowboy’s hat off of his head.
In the old west, touching one’s hand to the brim of one’s hat when meeting signaled friendly intentions by moving the hand away from the holster.
